2015-16年は50名の中学生、高校生スイマー達、そしてそれを共に応援してくれる保護者の方々と夢に向かって突き進む。

Kohei Asano

In 2007, he left his home country in order to pursue his goal in becoming a great swimming coach. He has a total of 12 years of coaching experience; 4 years in Japan and 7 years in the US. His passion for swimming and his cultural awareness makes him a unique and creative minded coach. In the few years that he has been here, he has adapted to the diverse coaching and managing styles of the American culture. His willingness to stand by the poolside 365 days shows his love and dedication to help his swimmers improve and overcome their challenges.

He has a special working visa that no one normally gets because one needs to get approval from the government. He is the only coach from abroad who is a H1-b visa holder also working at a swim club legally in USA. Kohei did not know any English when he moved to the United States. Now he can talk to everyone fluently. You will be surprised to know how much he was challenged to add English as a second language.

He appreciates all of the coaches who trust him by giving him the opportunity to coach the varsity group for the past 5 years. In addition to his responsibilities as the varsity group coach, he will continue to be the assistant to all coaches - Tony, Tisha, Carlene, Janet, Hilary and PASA pro team during the 2016 season. He will also be supporting all of Rinconada‘s programs this season.

Kohei is a fun and humorous guy with a lot of passion for swimming. He enjoys socializing with his Japanese and American friends during the weekends. He often attends BBQs and goes to the popular ramen joints in the bay area. He also enjoys watching mixed martial arts and professional wrestling and has an ever-growing collection of sneakers. He is married to his Japanese wife and they had their first baby this year. His son was born here, in the USA and his name is Kento. Kento is an American citizen!

なぜパサがここまでビジネスとともにうまくいっているかの

5つの理由をシェアしたい。

それと同時にパサで8年目の俺の感じたことも書き込んでいきたい。

日本のクラブ経営やコーチングスタイルとは違うものである。

俺もいろいろなクラブを見てきたが、

ここまで自由度があり、フレキシブルに対応が効き、居心地がいい。

ぜひ自分のクラブと比べていいところは取り入れてほしい。

CLUB EXCELLENCE SPOTLIGHT: PALO ALTO STANFORD AQUATICS

この記事はUSA swimmingに掲載されたパサの秘密である。

Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics in Palo Alto, Calif., recently wrapped up another standout summer in which the team swam away with the combined team title at the Speedo Junior National Championships, while placing third in both the men’s and women’s meets. Eugene Godsoe also earned a spot on the 2015-2016 U.S. National Team roster, capping a successful season in which the team finished fifth in USA Swimming’s Club Excellence program rankings.

“Club Excellence is part of our overall team goals and team dynamic, and it’s a tool by which we gauge the work we do and how it has benefits for the athletes,” said head coach Tony Batis. Batis added that the team is not only focused on placing well at high-level meets, but creating a great team environment and happy swimmers.

“We have similar goals every year – we want to place high at winter and summer juniors, and qualify as many swimmers as we can for Olympic Trials,” he said. “Our goal every year is to be better than we were the year before. And maybe that means we have happy 8-and-unders who are really excited about the next step of their swimming. The process is just as important as the final result.”

With more than 1,500 swimmers training at six different training sites, Palo Alto Stanford has a very large talent pool to draw from, and Batis details the keys to the club’s ongoing success in this week’s Club Excellence Spotlight.


1. Great coaching staff.
We have approximately 27 coaches spread over our six sites, ranging from first-year, entry-level coaches to coaches who have been coaching 20 or 30 years and have a load of experience. The size and continuity of our coaching staff helps promote a great program with fresh ideas.

このフレッシュなアイデアというのがいつもとんでもなくいい方法に向かう。珍しいコーチは、パラリンピック銅メダリスト、トライアスロンベースコーチ、インスタグラムコーチ、外人コーチ(日本の競泳論を知る)などなど。パサ競泳育ちのやつゼロ。みんなパサ以外からきている。


2. Strong parent and community support.
Palo Alto is very health-conscious and fitness oriented community, and the parents are very willing to go the extra mile in helping us run the best swim program in the community.

モンスターペアレンツが出ない仕組みもある。パサは保護者へのルールも多数。そもそもアメリカの保護者はコーチのアイデアに耳を傾けてくれる。攻撃的ではない

3. Willingness to share and grow with new ideas.
We have a lot of coaches who come from varying backgrounds, some not even from the sport of swimming, and when we have staff meetings, we all share ideas that will expand on our program. We also have educational lunches where one of our coaches might make a presentation to the staff, and then we discuss the ideas that are brought forward. We don’t just stick with preconceived ideas of what works.

ただ思い描くだけではない

伝統をどんどん変える、新しい意見に反対せず乗る。どんどん前に持っていく。このコーチランチが若いコーチのレベルアップに。

4. Well balanced program.
It’s not just important how our elite kids do, but how great of a program we provide across all facets of swimming – learn-to-swim, pre-competitive, all the way up to the elite level. We want to provide opportunities for all of our kids to stay in aquatics.

エリートスイマーだけが重要ではない。準選手、learner、いつでもエリートになれる機会を用意する。選手は辞めない。

俺のグループに課せられた使命。辞めさせない。けどエリートに近づける。そのプログラムを提供し続ける。


5. Willingness to give back.
The tradition that the program has created is one where kids who go off to college remember where they came from. Maybe they were in a different training group, a summer team, or a different team altogether, but we want the kids to give back in multiple ways. A lot of my alumni are married now and have jobs and kids and they’ve come back to the area and are swimming for me again. We had a lady recently who swam with us and is now in her mid-30s and is an international businesswoman and she came back and talked to the girls on the team about her journey. Or, when we have kids go on international trips, we have the coaches in the group select a swimmer from the team and the traveling swimmer will bring them a gift or postcard from the meet.

卒業生は結婚し、子供がクラブに帰ってくる。インターナショナルビジネスで帰ってくる。試合で遠征に行けばギフトをもっていく、ギフトをもって帰ってくる。

みんなパサに携わる。サポートしてくれる。これは枚方スイミングの感じに似ている。選手が卒業してコーチになる感じ。


俺が一番いいと思うのは秘密のスカウト。

これだけ評判がいいと他のクラブからがっつり移籍してくる。

もちろん条件を出し獲る。伸ばす。SNSも強いのでどんどん良い噂は広がる。

このビジネスモデル、考えはなかなか日本ではみない。

いや、できないだろう。

いいとこは取り入れてクラブイメージの参考にしてもらいたい。
