Kohei Asano

In 2007, he left his home country in order to pursue his goal in becoming a great swimming coach. He has a total of 12 years of coaching experience; 4 years in Japan and 7 years in the US. His passion for swimming and his cultural awareness makes him a unique and creative minded coach. In the few years that he has been here, he has adapted to the diverse coaching and managing styles of the American culture. His willingness to stand by the poolside 365 days shows his love and dedication to help his swimmers improve and overcome their challenges.

He has a special working visa that no one normally gets because one needs to get approval from the government. He is the only coach from abroad who is a H1-b visa holder also working at a swim club legally in USA. Kohei did not know any English when he moved to the United States. Now he can talk to everyone fluently. You will be surprised to know how much he was challenged to add English as a second language.

He appreciates all of the coaches who trust him by giving him the opportunity to coach the varsity group for the past 5 years. In addition to his responsibilities as the varsity group coach, he will continue to be the assistant to all coaches - Tony, Tisha, Carlene, Janet, Hilary and PASA pro team during the 2016 season. He will also be supporting all of Rinconada‘s programs this season.

Kohei is a fun and humorous guy with a lot of passion for swimming. He enjoys socializing with his Japanese and American friends during the weekends. He often attends BBQs and goes to the popular ramen joints in the bay area. He also enjoys watching mixed martial arts and professional wrestling and has an ever-growing collection of sneakers. He is married to his Japanese wife and they had their first baby this year. His son was born here, in the USA and his name is Kento. Kento is an American citizen!

Some may question why one would trade swimming outdoors under the sunny skies of Palo Alto for the snowy suburbs of Ann Arbor at Club Wolverine. But Geoff Cheah found plenty of reasons to make the lifestyle change, one being that “there is something special going on at Michigan”.
This isn’t to say that he wasn’t appreciative of the time he spent at Stanford. As his collegiate career came and went, he ended up becoming a three-time All-American and a PAC 12 Champion in the 200 free relay. With the success Stanford brought him, he had nothing but good things to say about his alma mater. He stuck around to finish out his degree and to spend time training with the Stanford post-grad group, where he was able to compete at the 2011 World University Games for Hong Kong and set ten Hong Kong national records in 2013. However, Cheah had already been accustomed to the international stage, competing in the 2007 and 2009 World Championships and claiming Hong Kong’s male swimmer of the year award two years in a row.
As all veteran swimmers know, swimming up and down the pool, following the same black line for almost four hours a day never gets any more exciting. Yet despite Cheah’s impressive summer swims that he had while training at Stanford, he knew it was time for a change of scenery.
Cue in 2013 National Champions, the Michigan Wolverines. Yes, Club Wolverine has Mike Bottom, elite swimmers, an excellent staff, and a solid support structure (phsyio, strength coach, nutritionist all in one place), but Cheah was looking more at the intangibles than tangibles. “I liked the innovation that they were pushing in swimming… With the leadership there I thought I’d give the change a try to keep taking my swimming to new heights”.
With the sprinters Cheah will be able to train with at CW, alongside the combination of the fantastic training environment, there isn’t a better place the Stanford alum could’ve picked. Let’s just hope he’ll be able to adjust to the not so sunny skies.

EUGENE GODSOE FIRST U.S. SPONSORED SWIMMER FOR MIZUNO; ANNOUNCES WITH NEW, ORIGINAL SONG

After several splashy signings in their home-country of Japan last week, sportswear brand Mizuno has made their first step into the American swimming market with a sponsorship deal of American National Team swimmer, and World Championship medalist, Eugene Godsoe.
The company with annual revenue pushing $1.5 billion adds Godsoe to a list of swimmers that include 200 breaststroke World Record holder Akihiro Yamaguchi and Japan’s biggest current swimming star Kosuke Hagino.
While Godsoe is the company’s first American swimmer, he is far from their first American sponsored athlete. The company previously sponsored 9-time track & field gold medalist Carl Lewis and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana during their careers: both of whom are part of a very short conversation for the greatest ever in their respective sports.
“I’ve been searching for a brand in swimming that shares my values, passion, and vision for the sport,” Godsoe said of his new agreement. “Mizuno does just that. I have great confidence in what I have yet to achieve, and Mizuno believes in me as well. I’m very excited to wear their technology and see what we can accomplish.”
Godsoe commemorated the event with the release of another cover song video for which he has become so well-known within the swimming community, and he’s wearing a Mizuno t-shirt in the video. This song is all instrumental, just Eugene on his piano, and in a deviance from his standard fare, is actually a Godsoe original. It’s titled “Within.”
