Kohei Asano

In 2007, he left his home country in order to pursue his goal in becoming a great swimming coach. He has a total of 12 years of coaching experience; 4 years in Japan and 7 years in the US. His passion for swimming and his cultural awareness makes him a unique and creative minded coach. In the few years that he has been here, he has adapted to the diverse coaching and managing styles of the American culture. His willingness to stand by the poolside 365 days shows his love and dedication to help his swimmers improve and overcome their challenges.

He has a special working visa that no one normally gets because one needs to get approval from the government. He is the only coach from abroad who is a H1-b visa holder also working at a swim club legally in USA. Kohei did not know any English when he moved to the United States. Now he can talk to everyone fluently. You will be surprised to know how much he was challenged to add English as a second language.

He appreciates all of the coaches who trust him by giving him the opportunity to coach the varsity group for the past 5 years. In addition to his responsibilities as the varsity group coach, he will continue to be the assistant to all coaches - Tony, Tisha, Carlene, Janet, Hilary and PASA pro team during the 2016 season. He will also be supporting all of Rinconada‘s programs this season.

Kohei is a fun and humorous guy with a lot of passion for swimming. He enjoys socializing with his Japanese and American friends during the weekends. He often attends BBQs and goes to the popular ramen joints in the bay area. He also enjoys watching mixed martial arts and professional wrestling and has an ever-growing collection of sneakers. He is married to his Japanese wife and they had their first baby this year. His son was born here, in the USA and his name is Kento. Kento is an American citizen!

Dear PASA Families,

Hosting a C/B/A+ Meet is usually considered to be predictable and straightforward. However, with 880 swimmers and more than 16 teams, this C/B/A+ meet was BIG, big enough to feel like we were running something a little different from what we had hosted before. And yet all the pieces fit together and the meet ran smoothly. This wouldn't have happened without the great teamwork from the PASA families. Thanks so very much to all of you for the time and effort that you have spent while making this meet a success, and being so much fun to work with.

We don't mean this to sound like an Academy Award speech, but there are people who deserve to be individually mentioned for special thanks. Some of this work they did was very visible and some was behind the scenes. Each of them did something that was critical to making the pieces of this meet fit together.

Rhiannon Wallace - for pulling together an amazing team of volunteers. It's really a skill to match the right people to the right job, to nicely but firmly encourage people to sign up, and to switch people around on the fly as unexpected needs arose during the meet. She did all of this perfectly and graciously, and this meet would have failed without her.

Our corner officials - for working all day, both days, managing the pace of the meet and ensuring the races were fair. You might not appreciate the huge amount of effort that goes into this until you're at a meet that runs mysteriously long. Big thanks to the Meet Referee, #arol Waln (Sunnyvale), #arl Nakamura (PASA-Rinconada), #ike Meyer (PASA-Rinconada), #ulie Jomo (PASA-SCRA) and #ebbie Romani (PASA-Alpine) for being part of the corner official team. Thanks also to the Stroke and Turn Officials for their work in making our athletes better swimmers.

Our Head Marshals, #oy Wang and #ong Nguyen, and the great team of marshals - for keeping the kids safe and keeping the place clean (including doing some tasks that we don't want to mention here). They managed this challenge incredibly well. #oy and one of our marshals, #tanley Dong, even hosed down the locker room floors on Sat night so that they were clean for the Sunday swimmers.

Our renowned Hospitality Chairpersons - Many coaches and officials raved about our Hospitality's awesome food and awesome service! #udos to #ebra Wittenbrink and #atsy Wong who have run this year after year. Special thanks to the group of chefs for sharing their excellent cooking skills during the meet.

Our courageous first-time Snack Bar Chairpersons, #ylvia Kim and #abriela Tomescu - for being willing to step up to head this big job and devoting many hours to get it up and running. Thanks to #uliana Tan and #un-Young Kim for being both resources and helping hands.

Our fearless novice Check In Chairperson, #umi Matsuda - for supervising the team that checked in all 880 swimmers and processed scratches for our deck seeding. This weekend, the Check In Desk processed more varieties of exception processing than we usually see in 2 or 3 meets combined.

Our Entries Chair, #amara Thomas - for managing the paper entries, tirelessly monitoring session caps till late Sunday night, and figuring out how to get what we needed from Swim Connection. She also back-filled Desk and Check-in on Saturday morning so we could make sure our new volunteers were adequately trained.

Our Head Timers - for their efforts in ensuring that we get times for all races. We especially thank #iang and #ingyu Wu who persevered through three sessions of being attentive in the midst of anxious swimmers, parents and volunteers behind the blocks.

Our Awards Chair, #usanna Ventura - for making sure that the swimmers had ribbons and medals to celebrate their accomplishments.

Our Donations Volunteer, #etsy Johnson - for securing donations from our sponsors.

Our Safety Net, #obin Nelson - who helped out everywhere that was needed.

Our awesome team of coaches - In addition to coaching your kids to swim their best, Ben oversaw the entire meet; Ricky was always available to us when we needed his experience, his contacts or his keys; Kohei dived in the pool to pick up broken glass bottle pieces bare-handed; Tisha stayed late to help with cleanup both days; and Hilary made her skills from her other job available when we needed her. Thank you.

Our PASA - Rinconada Parent Volunteers - for working together, doing what needed to be done, starting early, staying late, being flexible about filling the needs of the meet, learning new things. Because, of course, without you and each and every one of the PASA Rinconada volunteers for this meet, the Chairpersons and the Meet Directors would not have been able to get the meet jobs completed.

The weather - for giving us two beautiful sunny days. Did you notice that it rained the night before the meet and the night the meet ended?
This is a long list of Thank You's, but if you only worked on part of the meet, it might give you more insight as to what your fellow volunteers were doing. Thanks for reading all the way to the end. Thanks again to all of you for making the meet a success. Our athletes would not be able to compete without you.

Best,
#athryn Hall and #etty Chan
